Abu Dhabi police foiled an attempt by two Arab men to steal five luxury vehicles from a local car rent company and smuggle them to their country through a nearby Gulf nation, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police detective posting as a go-between met a Turkish man who came to Abu Dhabi and rented five luxury cars over a period of two days.

He then gave the cars’ keys to the police decoy and asked him to hand them to an Arab man due to arrive soon to take delivery of the vehicles.
He told him the man would pay him Dh10,000 for this service. Two days later, the 29-year-old man, an employee at a UAE car rent firm, arrived and asked for the keys of the cars which were parked in the industrial area of Musaffah just outside Abu Dhabi city.

The man, identified as AMG, told the police decoy he was expecting the arrival of an accomplice to bring him forged papers for the cars so they can be smuggled through a neighbouring Gulf state before they are shipped to his Arab country.

A 54-year-old man, identified as ASM, who works as a manager of a local fuels firm, later arrived with the forged documents and a truck to ship the vehicles.“When they loaded the cars and were about to set off, police arrested the two…police also issued an international warrant to arrest the first accomplice who managed to leave the country,” Brigadier Hamad Al Hammadi, director of the detectives and criminal investigation department at the interior ministry, said, quoted by 'Emarat Al Youm' Arabic language daily.
