The school inspection report for the academic year 2015-16 show “significant improvement”, noted education regulatory authority Adec (Abu Dhabi Education Council).

It shows 74 per cent schools are Band A and B.

“This is a great indicator that schools are doing a superb job. Out of the 110 schools, 43 schools are Band A, 38 schools  Band B and 29 Schools B and C, which means that 39 percent of schools or a total of 43 schools are at least good or above,” said Hamad Al Dhaheri, Private Schools and Quality Assurance Sector’s (PSQA’s) Executive Director.

In terms of quality, out of the 110 private schools inspected, four were graded “outstanding”, 12 “very good”, 27 “good”, 38 “acceptable”, 23 “weak” and six “very weak”.

In addition, 40 per cent of schools improved between “Round Three” and “Round Four” of inspections, of which 19 schools improved from Band B to A and four schools jumped from Band C to A.

However, four schools slipped in their ranking.

Of the 110 private schools inspected, 67 schools were in Abu Dhabi, 39 in Al Ain and four in the Western region. They include 31 American curriculum schools, 25 British, 27 Ministry of Education, 11 Indian and 16 schools under diverse curriculums (such as Pakistani, German, IB schools, etc.)

As part of the UAE Inspection Framework, there are six performance standards, which include: Students’ Achievement; students’ Personal and social development and their innovation skills; teaching and assessment; curriculum; the protection, care guidance and support of students; and leadership and Management.

“This Framework is a milestone in the development of the education sector, as it is the culmination of the best models of school evaluations and school improvement that were being used in schools across Abu Dhabi,” said Al Dhaheri.

Results for the year also show that 40 per cent of schools performed good and above on student achievement; 62 per cent of schools showed good and above performance on students social and personal development; 39 per cent of schools showed good and above performance in teaching and assessment; 34 per cent of schools showed good and above on the quality of curriculum; 57 per cent of schools provided good and above in protection, care guidance and support of students, and 39 per cent of school leadership and management are good and above.

As per usual norm, each private school across Abu Dhabi is inspected once every 18 to 24 months. During that time schools are offered ample room to work on their overall performance, which is expected to be further enhanced with the implementation of the “UAE Inspection Framework” which offers schools a better understanding of what is expected out of them in order to ensure provision of quality education for all students equally.

Earlier this month, Adec announced that 51 private schools were allowed to increase their fees on an average of 6 per cent.
