The Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) has developed an integrated emergency plan for schools to implement in case of heavy rain.

This comes in line with Adec’s efforts to ensure safety of students and staff in all schools in Abu Dhabi.

Adec has circulated the plan to all schools, advising them on the precautionary measures to be taken in order to deal with rain and wind.

According to the plan, rain and wet conditions increase hazards associated with slipping and tripping, braking distances of vehicles, and the potential for slippage and handling difficulties for tools and heavy equipment. Rain fills holes and increases the risk of electrical shock when working with electrical equipment.

In addition, changes in soil conditions caused by rain create the potential for quicksand formation, wall collapse and cave-in. Chances of vehicles getting stuck in mud are higher and tools and personnel can slip on wet surfaces. These conditions may also decrease visibility. In some areas, heavy rain can also result in flooding.

The circular instructed schools to ensure that nurses and first-aid tools are available onsite and parents are updated on the situation.

If applicable, 4x4 vehicles should be available to help vehicles stuck in the water. Shelters should be provided to students and visitors.

All school community members are advised to bring warm clothing. Authorities, such as Civil Defense, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), Municipalities, and Sewer Services should be called in case of emergencies.

In addition, students should be advised not to pass through watery areas or play under the rain. Unnecessary electrical equipment should be switched off. Lectures should be organized by schools to inform students on how to deal with such situations.

As for school transportation, Adec advised drivers to take all necessary precautionary measures in case of rain. They are asked to park the car along the pavement when students get on and off the bus. In addition, drivers should make sure that all vehicle parts are mechanically functional. Bus supervisors are required to give students the utmost care when using the bus and be available near school buildings when evacuation is expected.

Abu Dhabi Police launches awareness initiative

The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ launched a public awareness initiative due to the climate changes over the last few days.

Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, explained that the initiative includes a set of necessary instructions for construction and maintenance workers in commercial buildings and high-rise towers.

The initiative also targets crane workers in under-construction buildings and facilities. Raising the awareness of citizens and residents about the safety measures they should take in case of heavy rain that may occur along with heavy cloud cover, strong winds, thunder, and lightning is also a main part of the initiative.

“The public will receive guidance through the Twitter and Facebook accounts of Abu Dhabi Police in addition to the official websites of the Ministry of Interior,” stated Major General Al  Menhali.

He added, “People may avoid dangerous situations and maintain their safety if they follow the weather forecast programs broadcasted by official sources like the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology.”

The Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police encouraged citizens and residents who enjoy wilderness trips to observe weather changes before departing on their trips, especially if they are heading to the eastern and southern parts of the country.

In order to maintain their safety, those who would like to go to these areas must avoid water-gathering areas, water valleys, natural water channels, and water-immersed locations.

Major General Al Menhali asked all motorists to abide by designated speed limits, keep a safety distance between vehicles and wear seatbelts. Drivers must also refrain from using hand held devices while driving, remaining in their lane and avoiding improper overtaking.

He also called upon drivers to carry out regular vehicle inspections, especially tires, breaks, and front and rear windscreen wipers.

Drivers are also advised to change engine oil, air filters, and the other parts that require changing and regular maintenance. This helps to avoid malfunctions and accidents. Al Menhali highlighted the importance of uniting cooperative efforts and following all precautionary standards.
