Abu Dhabi traffic police will deploy 150 new infrared cameras at key intersections to hunt for speedsters, red light jumpers and other offenders as part of the emirate’s drive to curb accidents on roads, according to a police officer.

The new cameras, which do not flash at offenders, will be installed at traffic lights junctions inside the capital and its outskirts to reinforce existing infrared cameras and other systems controlling main roads, said Captain Ahmed Al Muhairi, traffic safety director at the Abu Dhabi traffic department.

He said such sophisticated cameras, already in operation at some junctions in the city, can catch drivers speeding at the intersections, jumping the red signal, stopping g cars on the pedestrian area inside the junction and illegal change of lanes.

“They are advanced cameras which do not flash at offending vehicles…they are multi purpose systems which are very accurate and clear,” he told Emarat Al Youm daily.

His figures showed such cameras hunted 8,555 cars which jumped the red lights and committed other offences at intersections in the first four months of this year.
