Accidents caused by women: Triggers revealed

Jokes involving women behind the wheel are countless, and it is not the first time that women’s role in traffic is highlighted by traffic departments. Women drive differently than men, is claimed.

Although the Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA) shies away from making judgments whether these differences benefit one of the gender sides, it launched a campaign in which it emphasises the behaviour that is typical of the female in traffic.

Statistics give a bright perspective; a drop in the fatality rate of traffic accidents triggered by women decreased by as much as 64 per cent during the past three years,” said Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at he RTA.

Nonetheless, she stressed the importance of encouraging female drivers to be attentive of certain factors that are typical triggers of accidents caused by women.

Applying makeup while driving is one such factor, she pointed out.

Recently the Ministry of Interior (MoI) issued a circular to traffic departments across the UAE informing that a Dh1,000 fine should be levied on women applying make-up while driving.

Colonel Saif Al Mazrouei, Director General, Department of Traffic, Dubai Police added that the violation is more dangerous than using a mobile phone while driving.

However, other aspects that typically trigger accidents among women have more to do with the nature of the female gender, claims the RTA.

“Women hesitate at the moment of taking the right decision, especially at intersections and roundabouts, when parking, and when driving in the reverse,” said bin Adai.

Further, chaotic thinking and having multiple plans contribute to risks typically posed by women, she explained, while in other cases it is motherhood that makes the women subjective to risk factors.

Distraction as a result of monitoring the child in the car can deviate the attention from surprises on the road, which may occur suddenly, Maitha elaborated.
