The Dubai Court of Misdemeanour has adjourned the case of an Ethiopian couple who were accused of adultery and illegitimate pregnancy as the woman was in hospital after her delivery.

The couple had produced in their last hearing an attested marriage certificate proving they are husband and wife and had it translated into Arabic as per the request of the court.

DYT, 33, assistant mechanic, submitted on Tuesday a marriage contract proving that SWA, 27, housemaid, has been his wife since 2005.

However, the contract was based on Amharic calendar which has an eight-year difference from the Gregorian one. It was issued by the Ethiopian government and had recent attestation dates of relevant authorities.

The Dubai Misdemeanour Court presided by Ibrahim Khalid Abu Shamma on Tuesday asked the man to ensure that his wife attend the next hearing scheduled for next month.

As per the charge sheet, the couple, who live in Ajman, were arrested from one of the hotels in Dubai.

The housemaid, who has been in the country four years, was also accused of overstaying and working for an employer other than her sponsor.
