African tourists rob Ajman exchange with toy gun

Published

Five Nigerian men who entered the UAE as tourists used a toy gun to steal nearly Dh275,000 from an exchange store in Ajman before they were arrested by the police a week after the night robbery, the local press reported on Wednesday.

The five had stalked the shop in Rashid bin Humaid St in the northern emirate for hours before they stormed the place just as the staff members were preparing to close.

Newspapers quoted Ajman police commander Brigadier Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi as saying the five carried out the robbery two weeks ago but were arrested a week later following investigation by the police in Ajman, Dubai and Sharjah.

“They used a plastic gun in the operation and they left it there. They timed the robbery just as the workers were closing the shop as this prevented them from returning inside and setting off the alarm,” he said.

Ajman’s CID chief Lt Colonel Abdullah Saif al Matrooshi said police identified the car used in the operation through security cameras, adding that police dogs were used in tracing the robbers through their toy gun and piece of a shirt.

“Investigation led to their whereabouts. We arrested one of them in Sharjah and four in Dubai with the help of police in the two emirates. The driver is still on the run  but he likely does not know about the robbery,” he said.
