Following on the tracks of the Dubai Tram launch, the next mode of transport is shifting gear as a world-class trolley system makes headway for Downtown.

A seven-kilometre track will mark the journey for the Dubai Trolley, an electric-powered hop-on hop-off transit system, being navigated by master developer Emaar Properties.

Dubai Trolley is expected to serve as an easy-to-access connecting link between the various attractions in Downtown Dubai including the Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall.

Aligned along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, the first phase of Dubai Trolley will cover a distance of one-kilometre, comprising three stations to offer passengers easy access to The Dubai Mall, and The Address Downtown Dubai and Vida Downtown Dubai hotels.

The first phase is scheduled for completion early next year.

In an earlier Emirates 24|7 report, sources close to the project stated the Dubai Trolley will function down a single track; at a later stage, the track will be extended to circle The Dubai Mall in its entirety.

Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director of Emaar Properties, said: “Dubai Trolley is a smart urban mobility service that further builds on the trolley tram systems that are in use in several cities across the US and Europe.

“While they were a game-changer in public transport when first invented in the 1880s by introducing a new concept to urban mobility, they are now largely used as tourist attractions.”

He further added: “We have innovated further on both design and technology, incorporating world-class features, for Dubai Trolley.

“An environmentally sustainable system that supports the development vision of the UAE, Dubai Trolley brings a convenient and user-friendly transit mode to Downtown Dubai. It will add tremendous value to residents and visitors, enabling them to effortlessly access the world-class attractions….”

All aboard

Initially, Dubai Trolley will carry 74 passengers in double-decker trams that have the provision of open-deck and air-conditioned seating.

The trams are designed to complement the Arabesque architectural features of Downtown Dubai.

In a polished design, they are resplendent in bright red with aesthetic gold pin stripes and green trim colours.

During winter, the glass window panels of the trolley tram will be removed for the added comfort of the passengers.

Dubai Trolley will travel at an operational speed of 16kmph, with a maximum speed of 80kmph, which can be regulated according to requirement.

Convenient crossings will be provided along the tramway to facilitate safe and easy pedestrian movement.

Being electric and hydrogen powered, Emaar states the Dubai Trolley has practically zero-emission.

Dubai Trolley Terminus near Old Town Island will also feature several F&B offerings.

Meanwhile, the stations will also be air-conditioned, designed to reflect the architectural attributes of Downtown Dubai.

Work on the first phase of trolley-tracks and Dubai Trolley depots has already commenced.
