Ajman will build an international airport in the Al Manama area of the emirate, with the blueprint being finalised this week, a senior government official has confirmed to Emirates 24|7.

A high-level meeting will be held this week where top officials are expected to finalise the blueprint, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The airport is expected to be built at the cost of Dh1.3 billion by a consortium of Spanish companies.

In 2008, it was announced that the Ajman airport will built on a 60 million square feet of land and will be able to accommodate various types of aircrafts, serving at least one million passengers per year and handling a minimum of 400,000 tonnes of cargo.

The passengers and the cargo would have the latest technologies of modern European airports.

The airport will provide an impetus to the tourism industry, economy of the emirate and will create over 28,000 new jobs.

In December, Al Zorah Development Company said the first phase of Al Zorah Resorts, which comprises a theme park, pedestrian walkway and beach club, will be completed by summer of 2015.

The UAE plans to invest Dh500 billion ($136 billion) in aviation infrastructure during the next 10 years and expects to get 15 million tourists by 2020, according to figures released last year.
