Al Futtaim Motors on Sunday said it will contact 2,236 Lexus owners in the UAE over an issue with the retention clip used to secure the driver’s side floor mat.

“Following close communication with Lexus Japan we can confirm that only one special service campaign will affect customers in the UAE. This involves the inspection and replacement of the floor carpet cover, if necessary, in selected 2003-2006 model year Lexus RX330/350s," said Saud Abbasi, General Manager, Lexus at Al Futtaim Motors.

"The potential total number of vehicles involved is 2236," the statement said.

Lexus Japan has confirmed that if the retention clip used to secure the driver’s side floor mat has not been installed correctly, there is a small possibility the floor carpet cover could interfere with the accelerator pedal arm, it added.

"In the interests of delivering the highest standards of Lexus product quality and customer care, we will voluntarily contact our customers directly to explain the situation and arrange an appointment to determine if the vehicle is affected. Where necessary, we will organise a complimentary replacement of the effected floor carpet cover," the statement said.

The company said it regretted any inconvenience the service campaign may cause and thanked its Lexus customers for their patience and understanding. It asked if Lexus customers have further questions they can contact Customer Care Team on 800-lexus (between 8am and 6pm Sunday to Thursday).

Earlier, Dr Hachim Al Nuaimi, Director, Department of Consumer Protection, Ministry of Economy, was quoted as announcing the issue by Al Ittihad newspaper.

Globally, Toyota has recalled about two million vehicles, it said.

Dr Nuaimi added that clients could also call the ministry in case they face any difficulties over the issue.

Dr Nuaimi said as per the law consumers have the right to recover the price of defective cars; have them repaired or replaced in case of manufacturing defects.
