A cardiology surgery team at Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah saved a Syrian patient from death who had a severe rupture of the aorta artery inner wall and went into a coma.

Although the patient was not entitled to free treatment, yet he was admitted immediately to the hospital in line with the Ministry of Health's strategy to provide immediate treatment to emergency patients without any distinction.

Adnan Bahaa El Din, a Syrian national, was at home on July 15 when he suffered from sudden high blood pressure that led to severe rupture in the aorta artery in addition to heart stroke and partial paralysis caused by thrombosis.

He was immediately admitted to the emergency ward in Al Qassimi Hospital and due to his serious condition required surgical intervention.

Dr Santosh Mathew, consultant and head of cardiology surgery at Al Qassimi Hospital, said: “The case was one of the high risk and critical condition where about 20 per cent of the patients die immediately.

“When the patient was admitted, an open-heart surgery team consisting of seven doctors, heart device technician and two nurses specialised in these kinds of surgeries conducted the operation for more than six hours. The patient had blood clots on the heart with increased blood flow.”

Dr Mathew said during the past five years, Al Qassimi Hospital conducted more than 500 heart surgeries.
