A Filipino nurse is accused of killing his compatriot by stabbing him several times with a potato peeler when they quarrelled over a woman, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The Prosecution also accused 39-year-old OJM with consuming alcohol.

JM, a co-worker of the accused, testified that on October 2, 2012, he had gone with the victim LJ and another female friend to the flat of the accused to at about 9pm for dinner.

The three men sat talking in the accused’s room while the woman prepared food.

JM testified: “After having dinner the accused brought alcohol bottle and they all drank except for the woman. All of a sudden the accused and the victim started fighting… I did not know the reason as they were shouting in a language that I could not understand…the woman and I intervened to stop them… we did not notice if the accused stabbed the victim… the victim then left the room and asked me to follow him. While leaving, the accused told me that he thinks he stabbed the victim. Meanwhile, the victim headed to his room on the sixth floor. As my friend and I stepped out of the lift, we saw him on the floor and he was hardly breathing. I felt his chest and my hand was stained by blood. Lifting up his dress I saw a stab wound, so we called the police.”

Second Lieutenant Abdullah Matar testified that police rushed to Al Majeed building in Al Muraqqabat area at around 3.30am on October 3.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he died. The suspect was arrested before leaving Dubai International Airport at about 7.30am and was drunk.

Meanwhile, the woman who was also arrested on October 4 in Al Satwa area denied seeing the accused stabbing the victim claiming that she was in the kitchen. However, she admitted that she heard them fighting but did not give attention to that.

The suspect confessed that the fight broke out when the victim asked him why their female friend admires him, and what is remarkable in his character that makes him a better person for his girlfriend to be with him.

The suspect testified: “He started assaulting me with his hand. I got angry and grabbed a potato peeler that was atop the refrigerator and stabbed him thrice. He was strong and I did not find any other way to defend myself except that tool… my other friend tried to stop us from fighting. Meanwhile, he fell on the floor and my friend carried him and left the flat. Our female friend was in the kitchen and did not see the fight.”

Police confiscated the tool and the clothes the accused had worn on that night. Blood stains found on the floor, clothes of both the suspect and the victim as well on the tissue paper discovered in the garbage can have been confirmed to be the same.

Forensic reports confirm the victim succumbed to injuries sustained from deep stab in his heart cavity, which caused internal bleeding.

The victim was reportedly drunk at the time of his death.

When appeared before the Court the accused denied the murder accusation and admitted to having alcohol only.

The court ordered assigning a lawyer to defend the accused and adjourned the case until March 25.
