Known for its many specialties including infrastructure, shopping, luxury, but no one anticipated its fast growing reputation for medical tourism.

Plastic surgery happens to be a big one.

“Dubai is becoming a centre for that kind of activity, more and more people are associating Dubai with plastic surgery, “ said Dr Allen Rezai.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, the leading Senior Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon of the Elite Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Group explained a few reasons as to why people find Dubai to be an attractive place to have plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures.

Dr Allen said: “The plastic surgeons here are highly reputed who also practice in other major cities around the world, and we have hospitals that are of the highest standards of care.”

Dubai’s prime location between the East and West is known to be a huge plus point; furthermore  Dubai Healthcare City has become known as a centre of medical excellence in the Middle East.

“We opened our practice here in Dubai Healthcare City, as many of our international patients visiting our Harley Street practice came from the Gulf region, seeking advice and treatment for cosmetic and reconstructive concerns.”,” explained Dr Allen.

He added: “Cosmetic procedures in general, are  more popular with women from all regions, including the Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, and this is continuously rising.”

The surgeon listed rhinoplasty, gynecomastia, body contouring (that includes abdominoplasty and liposuction), breast augmentation and hair transplantation as the top requested operations by both male and female patients.

What’s more is that the practice receives a growing number of men who also seek non-surgical treatments such as  laser hair removal, radio frequency, laser hair removal and anti-aging treatments with fillers and Botox.

And the age groups vary depending on the procedure.

“For the most sought after procedures such as rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, liposuction, male chest reduction (gynecomastia), and breast augmentation, we have patients coming in from the age of 20 up to 40,” said Dr Allen.

He added: “Patients coming in for facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast reductions and other procedures are between the ages of 35 to 70, and even nonsurgical treatments, such as adding volume with fillers or fat transfer, starts from the age 30.”

And when did Dubai start attracting so many patients interested in plastic surgery?

Dr Allen said: “I believe it was after the global financial crisis, we saw an increase in all aspects of Plastic and cosmetic procedures in Dubai, both surgical and non-surgical.”

He continued: “There’s a lot of advertisements, lots of information provided locally and internationally, that’s one of the reasons why people from outside the UAE are getting to know what’s happening in Dubai, and that’s the reason they’re coming over.”

As suggested, it’s never been easier for folks to visit this side of the globe for a nip here and a tuck there.

As Dubai swiftly moves towards other globally renowned spots famed for their medical services including those in Thailand, Malaysia, and India, the home to the world’s busiest airport receives hundreds of thousands of passengers a day, some excitedly preparing to chillout under the sun, with a good percentage of them cheerfully preparing to go under the surgeon’s scalpel.
