An Egyptian family in the UAE have expressed solidarity with their country of residence by naming their new baby ‘Dubai’.

As the country is gearing up to celebrate its 40th National Day, Hamad Hashim, an Egyptian national living in Al Ain for the last four and half years, named his baby boy, born at Al Noor Hospital, after the emirate of Dubai.

According to hospital sources, the baby boy was born on October 29, 2011 at the Al Noor Hospital, Al Ain and the health authorities have issued a birth certificate to the baby with the name ‘Dubai’.

Dubai will now join Sydney, Brooklyn, London, Paris and Melbourne, among others, as having being named after a city.

“We decided to name the baby as Dubai, because of the special attachment the Arab population have towards the city,” the father, who did not want to reveal his identity told an Arabic newspaper.

“In our country it is common to give place names like Cairo as nick names to children. Sometimes, families give place names or very odd names to keep the child safe from public attention. This is the first time I am hearing that an Egyptian boy in Dubai has been named after Dubai. It is a good gesture on the part of the Egyptian father,” said an Egyptian national in Dubai.

Recently an Egyptian father named his new born baby girl as “Facebook” to celebrate the victory of the Egyptian Jasmine Revolution through Facebook and social networking sites.

If this is the start of a trend, we may soon many little “Dubais” running around.
