A young Ethiopian housemaid plunged to her death from the 21st floor balcony of a tower in Khalid Lagoon area in Sharjah on Saturday evening.

According to reports in 'Al Ittihad', the woman died on the spot.

Major Mohammad Al Shehhi, Head of Media Affairs, Sharjah Police, said investigation is on to determine the cause of her death.

He added that on receiving information, ambulances rushed to the site but the woman was already dead.

The body was then transferred to Kuwait Hospital.

The deceased had been working as a housemaid for the Arab family for just two weeks.

Teacher escapes rape charge by maid on grounds of 'impotence'

An Arab teacher sentenced to one year in jail and deportation on charges of raping his housemaid was acquitted by an appeals court on Wednesday on the grounds he is suffering from impotence.

A court of first instance in Abu Dhabi had convicted the unidentified teacher following a report by his Asian maid that he took advantage of his wife’s absence from home and raped her although his 14-year-old son was in his room.

During hearings on Wednesday, his lawyer dismissed the maid’s statements, saying her client is suffering from impotence because of diabetes. She said the man had not even had sex with his wife for several months.

“A rapist is supposed to be sexually strong, which is not the case of my client,” the lawyer told court, according to Alkhaleej newspaper.

She said the maid had fled her employer’s home to her country’s embassy and made up such accusations because she had been mistreated by his wife.

“To rape a woman while his 14-year-old son is at home does not make sense…another thing is that the maid admitted she had been maltreated by her employer’s wife and this proves she is trying to revenge by setting him up.”

The paper said the teacher was acquitted of all charges and the jail and deportation sentence was abolished.
