Sharjah residents may want to gear up for another round of traffic diversions as one more road will be closed for maintenance purposes on Thursday night.

Commuters between the two emirates – Dubai and Sharjah – should expect delays on their trip on Sunday and Monday, especially during the peak hours.

A part of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road will be closed for traffic in the direction of Al Wahda Street for four days, starting on Thursday evening 10pm and re-opening on Monday, the Sharjah Roads and Traffic Authority (SRTA) said.

The road closure includes the road reaching to and departing from the intersection with First Industrial Street.

An alternative road will be opened on the service lane of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road, on the same side as the road closure.

Nevertheless, expect traffic congestion as the closure occurs in the vicinity of another major traffic diversion on King Faisal Street.

A 2km-stretch of King Faisal Street connecting King Faisal Bridge and Union Square in the areas Abu Shagara and Al Qasmiyeh were closed in one direction last Saturday.

Motorists using this road to reach Al Wahda Street or Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road (SMBZ Road) on their commute to neighbouring emirates were prompted to find alternative routes.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road has been a popular option to get onto the highway.

Although the road closure will last no longer than four days, it will affect weekday commuters on Sunday and Monday, when maintenance work will be rounded up.

The SRTA has urged the public to exercise caution, adhere to traffic rules and follow the signboards to use alternative roads in order to avoid traffic congestion.

Last weekend, the stretch of road in the opposite direction was closed and reopened for traffic on Monday.

The maintenance projects are aimed to enhance traffic flow, adapting to a growing population on the road.
