Another woman was seriously injured while crossing the Al Itihad Road in front of Ansar Mall on Wednesday afternoon, barely few days after two Ethiopian ladies were killed while crossing the same road, said a source who witnessed the accident.

The lady involved in Wednesday’s incident is also believed to be from Ethiopia. The lady was trying to cross the busy highway with another lady friend, but was hit by a speeding vehicle and got seriously injured.

“The lady was trying to cross the eight-lane Al Itihad Highway when she was hit by a vehicle. Her companion did not risk her life and stood by the roadside,” said a source who witnessed the accident.

This accident happened around 3pm on Wednesday on the Sharjah-Dubai side of the 8 lane busy highway, which has no facility for safe pedestrian crossing. Residents have been calling for building a pedestrian bridge for years in order to safely cross the road.

“This is a dangerous spot and it was only a week ago that two Ethiopian ladies had tragic death while crossing the highway. A Bangladeshi national was hit and killed about a month ago,” said a resident, living in the area.

“It is a dangerous place as most of the shopping malls, Ansar and Safeer, are located on one side of the highway, while most of the residential buildings are on the other side. There is practically no way to cross the busy highway but to run across the road. Going for shopping in this area is like a nightmare,” said another resident.

“Sadly, many people went for shopping and never returned home,” he added.

On Friday night, two women died on the spot and one was critically injured in a horrific accident in front of Ansar Mall. The women, who were later identified as being Ethiopian, and were hit by a car while they were crossing the road. They were hit by a car headed to Dubai from Sharjah, according to eyewitness accounts. The third lady was critically injured and was undergoing treatment.
