Dubai Municipality on Wednesday launched a three- week anti-graffiti campaign under the title “Clean Walls … Beautiful City” in Zayed bin Sultan School, Satwa, Dubai.

Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department said  the civic body aims, through this initiative, to educate the school students about the need to keep walls of the city clean.

“Relatively Dubai is one of the cleanest cities in the world, but some areas are not up to the mark. It is our goal to completely eliminate grafitti via awareness programmes,’ he said.

“The campaign will focus on both government and private school students in Dubai as the studies show that 80 per cent of wall drawings are done by school students. There are several types of writing on walls including artistic graffiti, anti-ethnic writing, indecent writings, graphics, sports zeal, commercials, symbols and flirtatious phrases,” he explained.

‘We intend to treat the main causes instead of imposing penalties in the first stage. Penalties will be imposed only after completing the awareness campaign,’ he said.

Hamda Al Murr, one of the coordinators of the campaign said: “The municipality will use the most advanced channels to spread the message of the campaign through awareness lectures in schools, public places, posters and photos in social media sites, news and ads in the press and audio and visual media,’ she said.
