Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) Tobacco Free Dubai Project aims to conduct a series of awareness campaigns to educate the community about the health hazards of tobacco consumption.

The campaigns are being held in line with World No Tobacco Day 2013 and World Environment Day.

DHA is holding these awareness initiatives in partnership with SFFECO (Saudi Factory for Fire Equipment Est.), Dubai Investments and Dubai Municipality.

Dr Ahmad Kalban, CEO of Primary Healthcare at the DHA recently,  inaugurated the three-day campaign at Dubai Mall. He highlighted the need for such outreach programmes particularly with regard to tobacco use and lifestyle diseases which can be corrected through change of habits and modification of lifestyle.

DHA health practitioners presented the public with booklets about information on the dangers of tobacco use as well as methods to quit smoking.

Dr Hanan Obaid, Tobacco Free Dubai project leader and head of community health services programmes; primary health sector at the DHA, said that the DHA will conduct a series of awareness workshops in governmental entities as part of the education and screening programme.

“The campaign aims to educate the community about the health hazards of smoking. Public outreach events about the dangers of tobacco consumption and the latest methods of tobacco cessation are essential to reduce the prevalence of the number of smokers in society,” she said.

She added that evidence suggests a significant decline in the percentage of illnesses associated with tobacco consumption as soon as a smoker quits smoking and highlighted the importance of such educational campaigns.
