Appeal saves killer’s life in Khor Fakkan

A convicted Asian killer on the death row had his life saved after he managed to obtain a pardon from the victim’s relatives in return for diya (blood money) during an Appeals Court case in the eastern port of Khor Fakkan, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

A Court of First Instance had earlier sentenced the unnamed defendant to death after he was found guilty of murdering another Asian in Khor Fakkan.

But he appealed the sentence and was allowed to contact the victim’s family for negotiations on diya, they said.

The negotiations resulted in an agreement by the victim’s family to accept diya in exchange for granting him pardon under Islamic law.

Newspapers said the appeals court sentenced the defendant to three years in prison and ordered him to pay diya. It also ordered him deported from the UAE.
