Asian crushed to death by road roller in RAK

An Asian worker hiding in front of a road roller to take shelter of the sweltering summer sun in Ras Al Khaimah was crushed to death when his colleague moved the vehicle without noticing him, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The workers were asphalting a road in the northern emirate on Sunday when they decided to take a short break and catch their breath in the soaring temperatures and humidity smothering the UAE and other countries in the Arabian Peninsula.

The roller’s driver then climbed up to the wheel, started the rumbling engine and moved on to resume work, not noticing that his colleague was standing in front of the massive steel rolling machine. As the vehicle rumbled ahead, the driver felt something grinding and abruptly stopped the machine but it was too late.

Doctors at Saqr Hospital, quoted by Emarat Al Youm daily, said the man was brought dead because of fractures in the skull, chest and other parts of his body.
