Bid to bring 5.5kg hashish into UAE foiled

UAE customs inspectors at Al Ghuwaifat border have foiled an attempt to smuggle 5.55kg of hashish and 1,353 Tramadol pills into the UAE, which were found in the possession of three travellers entering Abu Dhabi.

According to a press release issued by the Administration of Customs, Department of Finance, the morning shift inspectors suspected a person travelling into the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in his vehicle, accompanied by two other passengers. Upon inspection, the three travellers were caught in the possession of 5.55kg of a brown substance and 1,353 pills hidden in their clothes.

 The seized substances were examined and proven to be hashish and Tramadol pills, which can only be consumed with a doctor’s prescription. The case and the illegal substances were transferred to the concerned authorities to take necessary legal action.

Mohamed Khadem Al Hameli, Acting Director-General of the General Administration of Customs- Abu Dhabi, praised the efforts of customs officials to protect their homeland from any potential risks and to maintain security.

Al Hameli said, "The General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi continuously works to enhance the efficiency of its operations and inspectors’ skills in using the latest passenger inspection tools, systems and procedures. This helps to improve the department’s performance and supports its role in ensuring stability and safety in the UAE as well as maintaining security through the country’s land, sea and air ports."

The Al Ghuwaifat border post is considered the largest and most important land port in the UAE. Over 2.5 million vehicles entered and exited the country through the border in 2014.

The General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi works to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods by adopting the latest devices and detection equipment when inspecting trucks, vehicles, passengers, luggage and packages.
