An Arab man who murdered his wife in Abu Dhabi was saved from the gallows and sentenced to five years in prison after the victim’s relatives accepted bloody money and pardoned him, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The unnamed defendant had told court he stabbed his wife seven times at their house in Musaffah just outside the capital after a heated argument during which she insulted him, the semi official Arabic language daily said.
His wife’s daughter from a former husband refused to pardon the killer while his son was only around three months old at the time of the murder.
“Because of the child’s age, the only available next of kin to pardon the defendant was the child grandfather, who is also the defendant’s father….he accepted diya (blood money) and pardoned the defendant.”
Under Islamic law, a defendant convicted of premeditated murder can escape capital punishment in case of pardon by the victim’s relatives in return for diya.
