Two local fishermen hunted a massive blue shark while fishing off Khorfakkan and experts believe the shark had entered the country’s water through the Arabian Sea.

Adel Abboud and Mustafa Alhammadi said the shark, dubbed “Dheeba” is around eight metre long and used to live in the Gulf water before it disappeared.

The semi official daily 'Al Ittihad' quoted an expert at the ministry of environment and water as saying the shark had apparently entered the UAE’s water from the Arabian sea.

“It could have sneaked into the Gulf of Oman from the Arabian Sea…this species lives away from the shores and it feeds mainly on fish…it does not attack humans unless it is attacked,” said Dr Ibrahim Al Jamali, head of the marine environment research centre.

The fishermen said the blue shark is inedible and has the ability to jump high out of the water to catch its victim.
