Family members, colleagues and friends of the nine victims of a major road accident in Al Hamim area of Abu Dhabi are awaiting the remains of the victims, which are likely to be repatriated today.

Eight oilfield workers died in a fatal accident on Al Hamim road in Abu Dhabi on Friday morning. The van they were travelling in collided with a heavy truck. The victims included Indians, Pakistanis and an Egyptian.

“We are waiting for the bodies to be released by Abu Dhabi Police. Some family members back in India haven’t been informed about the death. We haven’t informed relatives that the 23-year-old Rajendra Prasad died in the accident. His father knows that he is dead, but his sister and mother have been told that he is still in hospital after the accident,” said a relative who shared a room with the accident victim.

“I cannot believe that he is no more. We’d been living together for two years now,” he said. “He was just 23 years old and worked as assistant machine operator. Four others too worked in the oilfield and the victims’ families are waiting for the dead body,” he said.

“We hope all the nine bodies will be released soon and will be repatriated to their respective countries. There are 60 people working in the company, who are all saddened by the tragedy,” said a company source.
