Bollywood actor Farooq Sheikh passes away in Dubai

Dubai residents woke up to the shocking news of passing away of eminent actor and theatre personality Farooq Sheikh on late Friday night in the emirate.

Exactly two weeks ago, Farooq Sheikh was live on stage at Dubai World Trade Centre's Sheikh Rashid Hall with legendary singer Asha Bhosle and evergreen actress Rekha, mesmerizing the UAE audience for three hours as he guided them seamlessly through seven decades of Asha's musical career with facts and anecdotes.

The 64-year-old's body will be taken to India for the last rites, according to news reports.

Farooq Sheikh worked with critically acclaimed directors such as Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta. His contribution to parallel cinema or the new Indian cinema will always be remembered.

He has acted in many serials and shows on television and performed on stage in famous productions such as 'Tumhari Amrita', presented the TV show, 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai'.

Farooq Sheikh won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for 'Lahore'.

His first major film role was in the 'Garam Hawa' in 1973. He went on to act in several notable films such as 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' (1977), 'Noorie' (1979), 'Chashme Buddoor' (1981) and 'Kissi Se Na Kehna' (1983).
