An ambulance departed from its traditional mission of transporting ill people and embarked on a risky stunt to stop a car on the road towards Dubai after its brakes failed at 130 kph, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Kablan Awad, a 31-year-old Emirati, was driving his Nissan Altima with a friend from the eastern oasis town of Al Ain towards Dubai when he lost control of his brakes.

He phoned Dubai’s police just before entering town and told them that a disaster could happen unless his car is stopped by any way.

Police phoned the nearest patrol point which in turn sent a police car and an ambulance to escort the Altima before entering the busy streets in the city of two million.

Police told Awad to stay on phone as they tried to reassure him and give him instructions on how the plan to stop his vehicle will work.

“He was driving at 130 kph on the road before reaching the city…the ambulance then accelerated to 140 kph and blocked his way,” Emarat Al Youm daily said.

It said police told the driver that he should slowly bang his car in the rear of the ambulance travelling ahead of him.

“Awad complied with the police instruction and the plan worked perfectly…he banged his car into the ambulance and it started to slow down before it completely stopped.”
