Brave victim, pedestrians foil robbery attempt in Deira Dubai

An Egyptian cook allegedly tried to rob Dh116,851 from a bank clients but his attempt was foiled by the victim and the pedestrians, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AHI, 33, planned and attempted theft with other two accomplices identified as MA and JZ, who had been convicted in the case, to rob bank clients after throwing pepper on their faces.

According to the records, it happened on February 3, 2010 when the victim AJJ, 33, Egyptian, accountant, was heading to Mashreq bank behind Al Ghurair Centre at around 11am for bank transactions.

“I entered the bank and took a token, but I needed to get a tissue paper, so I lost my turn. I went to the employee at the counter and explained to her the situation. She asked me to go to a counter for cheque’s authentication since the amount was large. I got the authentication and approached the employee to get Dh116,851. She gave me the full amount in Dh100 notes, so she put it in a big envelop.

“I left the bank and headed to the company’s office. On my way, three people blocked my way. One of them threw pepper on my face and pulled envelop from my hand. I tried to keep hold the envelop which was torn off and few notes were thrown on to the street. One of the attackers could get hold of one of the package which contained Dh50,000 and ran away, and I got the other one. The second man stole the rest amount and attempted to run away. People gathered and chased the attacker and could get me back all the amount… one gave me Dh10,000 and another Dh5,000 until I had full amount. “

Police arrived to the scene and l lodged complaint with them.

Police in cooperation with Sharjah police arrested the accused who confessed to robbing bank clients and also attempting to rob the complainant.

The Court adjourned the case for verdict till June 11.
