A Chinese partner of a women’s salon allegedly offered a Dh50,000 bribe to an inspector of the Department of Economic Development (DED) in an effort to get his business back after it was shut down for offering immoral services.

The 53-year-old man identified as WZ tried to bribe Ibrahim Ahmad who heads the field inspection section of DED and also tried to lure him to stop routine checks that threw light on the illegal activities at his Nasa Ladies Salon that operated from Al Dahiri Building in the Bani Yas area.

While the salon was licensed to offer massage services to ladies, it was shut down several times for infringement of the rules by getting the women masseurs to offer massage and other immoral acts to male clients.

It also used the apartment as a restaurant and a bar although it was not licensed to do so, the DED official testified before the prosecution.

An inspector Noman Abdullah reported that on August 17 a Chinese man knocked on his door and sought to meet the section head. He obviously got the wrong house, the official said.

The Chinese man however refused to leave even when told that it was not the house of the man he was looking for insisting that he saw the official get into the same house.

The following day, Abdullah found the man waiting outside his house while driving out. The Chinese man was holding an envelope in his hand.

After the matter was reported to the section head Ahmad, the Chinese man was again spotted waiting at the parking lot in a black car.

When the team section head confronted him he was handed the envelope with some herbs and cash.

He brought the Chinese man along to his office and got some staffers to count the money and issued a fine for offering to bribe a public servant.

The accused denied the charges before the court and pleaded not guilty.

The case has been adjourned to January 10.
