Brit who wore bikini in shopping mall let off

Holidaymaker questioned by police after walking through a Dubai shopping centre in a bikini

A British holidaymaker was questioned after stripping down to her bikini and walking through a shopping mall in Dubai.

The woman was buying clothes and gifts in a Dubai mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arab woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing', according to the 'Daily Mail'.

The pair then became embroiled in a heated row in front of hundreds of bemused shoppers.

Incensed by the Arab woman's comments, the British woman told her to 'mind her own business' before stripping out of her clothes and 'taunting' the locals by walking around in only her bikini.

The mall's security team then intervened and detained the woman. She was later questioned by police but not formally charged.

The woman’s identity is unknown.

@Nick. Fully appreciate the role Arabic civilisation has played in the world and respect it. However, Brits led the way in developing the Gulf countries in the 1920-1960's. (expect KSA maybe). @Arab - Any Brit that is skilled gets well paid in UK. Anyone that tells you different is exaggerating. We just don't get tax here and lots of sun.

In order to prevent the public from taking the law into their own hands and instead of being mere spectators enjoying the live show, the authorities, police and security guards must intervene to stop rampant semi nudism - and not only in malls. Remember that decency is a permanent and perpetual requirement not only in Ramadan.

@Laura - no sweety, you can wear those short strapless very low cut dresses once you go back to you country, or at home, or in a night club ;) making sure you don't reveal it outside of the club. @Steve (again) - maybe Britons worked in UK and got paid nothing but comming over here they get paid a lot. Some are my friends and they told me so.

One should know the rules and laws of the country he/she is visiting and learn to respect and abide. "If you are in Rome, do as the Romans". Get that?

@Steve: If it weren't for the Muslims teaching the Brits how to count, measure, etc, etc, so long ago... well need I say more? Thanks for repaying the favor.

As a new expat to this city, I need to know if decent dress should only be worn in Ramadan because I intend to return to my strapless very low cut dresses once Ramadan ends. Can I?

Maybe it's time to stop blaming the poor British holidaymaker. Why should tourists and residents pay the price for rules and regulations that are vague, confused, incomprehensible, dithery and toothless.

To Steve, nice answer. I couldn't ignore your comment. Your'e a funny man.

Batman, wherever you're from, it seems you have a chip on your shoulder. If it wasn't for Brits coming here and discovering oil in the first place... well need I say more? Since then we've pretty much set things up (including Emirates). Anyway this is not an expat issue, it's a tourist issue. Most of the Western tourists here are Brit so no suprise the incidents are largely Brit. Anyway Batman we manage the talent sourcing so either like it or go elsewhere.

Send the Brits home. There are many other Western countries with highly skilled expertise in engineering, science, technology that are far better behaved. Source pivitol talent from there.

@Alex, people wearing the hijab in France, Germany and the UK are French, German and British, so they're home and can do whatever they want as long as they respect the law. This direspectful naked lady isn't home here, so she (and all expartiates) should either respect our laws and values or she gets out. How about this?

Every country has its culture and laws. Respect them or stay away. Period.

I see a serious identity crisis in the UAE. Is it Arab, Muslim, Western, conservative, liberal? In trying to blindly emulate the West, the UAE is losing its originality and identity.

To 'just me'; brush the chip of your shoulder old chap. Brits get paid no more than other Western expats and what we do get paid is only what we get in our own country except we don't pay the tax here. Also the global business model is structured around Western business practices so that sets us apart from many individuals from other parts of the globe. Your point was also irrelivant to the situation. This person was a tourist, she did something stupid, so send her home.

Of course, she had guts to confront the Arab woman in her own country, but why not? Brits are privileged here: big salaries, large benefits they do not usually get in their own country and all that just because they talk pure English. They are clearly not smarter than the others, so I think this has gone to their head and they also believe they can disrespect the whole country. Shame on them.

I commend the Arab lady for rebuking the semi-nude British female who has shown absolute contempt towards the laws of this land. You can't be serious, she was let off?

The authorities must put a stop to semi nudism once and for all. Tourism does not mean decadence, depravity, moral perversion, impairment of virtue and moral principles.

The city of Barcelona in Spain has had to create signs kindly asking drunk Brits not to pee on their streets at night. So interesting how Brits on the one hand have the reputation for being extremely reserved and polite, yet on the other they are also known as notorious hooligans.

    Islam teaches forgiveness and acceptance.

British all over the world have the reputation as tourists of being extremely insensitive but also ignorant and hopefully with poor economic performance and furter increases in personal taxes they will travel less and visit this place less!
