Campaign to clean-up the world launched in Dubai

Dubai Municipality launched the Clean Up the World campaign at Heritage Village in Al-Shindaga.

“Dubai is going to see a fantastic joint-action between government bodies, private sector and public in the coming days, to preserve our nature and recourses,” highlighted Salah Amiri, assistant director general in-charge of Environment & Public Health Services sector.

“The occasion is also special because this is the 20th year since this campaign was launched in Dubai. Over the last 19 years, the Municipality has been able to create a culture of collective efforts for the cause of nature and environment.”

He added that the need to keep the city clean is not just a municipal activity but has become the responsibility of every Dubai citizen.

Abdul Majeed Saifaie, director of waste management department, added, “Over the past few years the campaign has emerged as one of the best community-based initiatives. It not only helped raise awareness but was also instrumental in disposing huge amounts of waste at designated areas.”

Last year, 38,430 volunteers joined in various activities and collected over 20,000 ton of waste materials and safely removed it.

The participants included 17 government organisations and 266 private organizations.

In the educational institutions category 59 were from government sector, while 54 participated from the private sector.

After the official inauguration, school kids put up a cultural programme, and a film on the activities of Cleanup The world during the past years was shown.

Exhibitions and other awareness programs were also held at the event.

Later, the main clean-up activity of the day was held at the Fishing Village.

According to Hussain Gulam, chief coordinator of the event, clean-up activities and other programs will continue till November 22 in various parts of the emirate.

Today, the activities will be centered around Al-Warqa area.

On November 21, the drive will kick-off at 9am at Al-Safouh beach. On November 22, NGOs and residents will join hands to clean up Al- Qouz industrial area. Apart from this, activities will also be held at Karama, Jebal Ali, Qusais and Hatta.

As part of the clean-up activity, abandoned vehicles will be removed in coordination with operational unit at Dubai Municipality waste management department.

Pest control activities will also be held in various parts of Dubai in coordination with certified pest control companies.
