Canadian gets justice in Dh197,000 gold dust con

Liberians cheat a Canadian of Dh197,000 claiming to possess 100kg gold powder

The Dubai Misdemeanour Court awarded six months jail term followed by deportation to two Liberian visitors who claimed to have 100kg gold powder and swindled Dh197,000 from a Canadian.

DJ, 31, and AB, 30 confessed before the prosecution to having cheated SW, 47.

During the investigation, the accused revealed that they came to the UAE on visit to take revenge on SW who, they claimed, had cheated several people in Liberia before he left for the Emirates.

Explaining the modus operandi, the accused said after they tracked SW down, they arranged for a meeting with him and sought monetary help to clear 100kg gold powder from a cargo company in Dubai.

SW inturn asked for a share of the profits that would be made from selling the gold powder for his help.

SW agreed to pay them Dh197,000 for clearing the box of gold powder after signing an agreement with the two Liberians.

The accused also confessed that they sought the help of a woman to act as a senior employee of a cargo company to deceive the victim.

Meanwhile, recounting his experience before the prosecution, SW said on December 21 last year, he received a phone call from the Liberian, who sought his help to clear the box of gold powder held by a cargo company.

And that he had agreed to help the Liberians provided they shared the  profits with him, as the two accused told him they would make the gold into bullions and sell it for $15,000 per kilo.

So SW asked them to arrange a meeting with the cargo company. And they introduced a woman who claimed to be the cargo company’s deputy director.

The woman, who spoke in English and French, assured him that the gold powder box was in the company’s possession.

However,SW said that he had not signed any agreement with the accused about the contract terms before handing over the money to them.
