More than 400 people died of cancer in the UAE in 2013, according to official figures obtained by ‘Emirates24|7’. Most of them were diagnosed in late stages, and thus, the recovery rate was low.

According to recent figures released by the UAE Ministry of Health, 325 people died of cancer in different medical institutions under the ministry in the country. These do not include cases treated by medical institutions under the Abu Dhabi Health Authority, Dubai Health Authority, and those treated in the private sector in UAE and abroad.

Official figures at the Dubai Health Authority reveal more than 75 people died of cancer in Dubai, compared to 65 in 2012.

According to the Ministry of Health Report, of the 325 deaths registered among cancer patients last year, 177 were expatriates and 148 nationals.

The report also highlighted the fact that more men died of cancer than women with 176 men and 149 women succumbing to the condition.

It also said that cancer of neoplasm topped the list of all cancers, claiming 165 lives. This was followed by trachea, bronchus, and lung cancer which registered 55 deaths; breast cancer claiming 39 lives; colon cancer with 25 cases, 21 deaths due to stomach cancer, 14 due to leukemia, five from rectum cancer, and one death due to cervix uteri cancer.

According to medical experts, early diagnosis of cancer increases the chances of cancer patients being cured as they can control the spread of cancer.
