Car accident leads to memory loss for UAE woman

Laila Mohammed, a government employee, had a car accident five years ago, which led to an internal bleeding in her brain. After that she started forgetting things and events which happened or the things that she should do.

“Although it’s five years after the accident, I still forget things fast. Sometimes I forget what you told me five minutes ago, so I rely mostly on taking notes of important things I have to do,” said Laila.

Dr.Tayseer Mohammed Zine ElAbidine, consulting and head of neurosurgery department at Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, said brain drain can cause forgetfulness and the problem depends on the location and size of bleeding in the brain.

Our memory process consists of three steps like in a computer - registration, storage and recall. A defect in any one of these steps leads to forgetfulness of information.

There are number of causes that result in defects and so it’s important to treat the causes at the earliest. For instance, thyroid disease, kidney failure, liver failure, and vitamin B12 deficiency can be causes. Also brain tumors, stroke, brain hemorrhage, brain injury; mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, phobias, etc. can cause forgetfulness. Dementia - as a result of aging - and Parkinson's disease are also causes, explained Dr ElAbidine.

“Similarly, environment effects memory, too. If the environment surrounding us is crowded and noisy our concentration will be distracted which will lead to forgetting,” he added.

Overuse of electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, televisions, and other devices can also lead to forgetting, distraction and anxiety.

Concentration is one of the main keys of remembering, and we need memory for that. So if we want to store and remember important information we should categorize and memorize it to make it easier to remember, just like how a computer functions.

Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy mind and a healthy body; treat internal diseases; avoid stress, anxiety, and depression; and engage in different activates to keep memory active.
