Ajman building fire, which left 300 families homeless, was caused by either a cigarette butt or burning coal, the Ajman Police have revealed.

Brigadier Abdullah Sultan Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of Ajman Police revealed that the primary cause of fire of Ajman tower was due to burning substance like coal or cigarette butt, reports Arabic daily Al Bayan.

He said that forensic investigation report on the fire proved that fire sparks that fell down from a balcony in the fourth floor ignited the flammable building materials stored there.

The fire flared up when it came in contact of cladding, which covers the Tower, and was fuelled by the wind.

He added the forensic investigation also revealed that a number of shishas had been found in the apartments of gutted towers.

The aluminum cladding which covered the building facade contributed to the rapid spread of fire between the burning apartments.

The Ajman Police, civil defense, immigration department formed a committee that instructed the municipality to stop issuing construction licenses for new building that would use cladding in its facade.

He noted that there were discussions and consultations between stakeholders to find solutions for the existing buildings and towers, using these flammable interfaces.
