Dubai restaurants will soon have to publish their Dubai Municipality inspection rankings for their patrons to see.

The decision to make the inspection record public was made at the 9th Dubai International Food and Safety Conference on Sunday.

This will make consumers aware of the quality of services and food served, leading to good public health, explained a top official.

Earlier, food inspection records were kept hidden from the public eye.

“Allowing the public to know the grading will go a long way in improving the quality and service. It will also motivate restaurateurs to step up their game,” said Sultan Al Tahir, head of inspections at Dubai Municipality’s food control department.

Dubai eateries are ranked A, B, C, D, or E based on the findings by the civic officials, with A awarded for impeccable services, and E for the lowest.

According to a top official, those hotels, restaurants or eateries that are ranked E will be phased out by 2020 if they show no scope for improvement.

Khalid Mohammad Sharif, the municipality department’s executive director, added that the civic body is planning to launch a smartphone app, that allows consumers to scan barcodes on food products.

“By using their smartphones, consumers can learn about the history of the product,” he explained. Apart from showing the nutritional value, expiry date and country of origin, consumers can also check if the product has ever been recalled.

Earlier, the Dubai Municipality had announced that food inspection will be carried out using Google Glass.
