One tonne of waste was collected during the Clean Up UAE 2017 campaign, which begun on Tuesday in Dibba, Al Fujairah.

Over 150 enthusiastic participants registered, mainly students from local schools, equipped with bio-degradable trash bags, cotton re-usable gloves, branded caps and t-shirts, and picked up rubbish in Fujairah.

The campaign was organised by the Emirates Environmental Group, EEG, in association with the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development.

Announcing the launch of the campaign, Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Chairperson of EEG, said, "Over the years Clean Up UAE has succeeded in achieving and surpassing its targets and objectives and has found its way into the minds of millions of people by creating a culture of behavioral change. What we are now experiencing is the demand from the community to expand the programme and make it a year round event."

"This year, EEG received a lot of requests from many stakeholders to organise the campaign in their areas which is a sign that the objectives of the campaign were perfectly reached over the last 15 years and the communities are now keen on being involved in it.," she said.

The campaign is very much aligned with the core principle of giving back to nature as 2017 is the #Year of Giving, she added.

Al Mar’ashi commented on the event saying the event forges partnerships as is evident from the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development Fujairah coming on board, saying, "I welcome the community to join us in our future campaigns throughout 2017."

Representatives of the police, ambulance and the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, were all on hand to ensure overall support and safety during the campaign.
