An Indian clerk who offered Dh8,000 as bribe to an investigator to release him from alcohol possession accusation received six months in jail followed by deportation.

On April 24, HMM, 35, was brought from CID custody to Naif police station to be investigated in a liquor possession case, said Saleh Hussain 37, policeman.

Firstly, HMM denied the charges of possessing alcohol but later on and while being questioned, the accused told the policeman: “You will not benefit from arresting me.”

When asked what did he mean, the accused offered the policeman a Dh8,000 bribe to release him and to help him get out of the case, Hussain testified before the prosecution.

The answer stunned the policeman and made him burst into laughter, but this made the accused to hike the amount to Dh10,000.

Hussain told his seniors about the bribe offer who asked him to trap the accused.

HMM was arrested red-handed while offering Dh5,000 as a bribe to the policeman when the later took him to another room to get his fingerprints.

Matar bin Khamis, 44, policeman, testified that he received a notification from Lieutenant Colonel Nasser Al Suweidi from Naif police station about an accused who had offered a bribe to the investigator so the trap was coordinated with Dubai Police Operations Department.

The accused was arrested red-handed with about Dh4,500 that he was offering to Hussain and when policemen came into the room he attempted to put the money back in his pocket, testified Khamis.
