Discount offers, free gold coins, interest free EMIs and much more is being offered by gold merchants and retailers who are going all out to woo customers as Indians celebrate Akshya Tritiya.

The day is considered the most auspicious day by Hindus and the best day to obtain wealth, especially gold and diamond.

Merchants are witnessing a growing demand for the yellow metal as the prices have dropped by almost 20 per cent since last month. According to some estimates almost 2 to 3 tonnes of gold is being sold every day during this festive season in Dubai alone.

Gold, which was priced above $1,900 in 2011, but is now available for around $1,430.

Leading jewellers have been luring customers with special offers and discounts from almost a month ago.

Joy Alukkas is giving away a free gold coin with a purchase of every Dh4,000 between May 12 and 14. Not just, customers who buy diamond or Polki jewellery will also be able to avail a 50 per cent off and receive 2gm gold.

Similarly those who shop at Sky Jewellery outlets are being offered up to 70 per cent discount on diamonds, 5 to 10 per cent additional cash back on purchases above Dh10,000 and Dh25,000-plus, free gold coins , zero deductions on exchange, etc.

Another jewellery chain Liali is running a “gift with purchase” offer where users spending Dh3,500 will receive a free gift – an oval loop pendant with diamonds.

Damas is offering its customers who spend Dh1,000 and more on diamond jewellery and Dh6,000 and more on gold are being offered free gifts ranging from 22K gold coin to wrist watch, jewellery case or a gold foil frame.

Not to be left behind, banks have joined the bandwagon, too.

ADCB has been sending SMS alerts to its clients stating that anyone using ADCB credit card to purchase gold jewellery at Joyalukkas can avail 0 per cent Interest payment plan for three months.

Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third day of the bright fortnight of Baisakh (April-May) as per the Hindu calendar. The word Akshaya, in Sanskrit, means something that can never diminish while Tritiya is the third day of the month.
