Colours of the UAE flag on Puma shoes anger nationals

Emiratis say flag on footwear is an insult to the nation

International sportswear brand Puma have launched a pair of limited edition trainers in the colours of the UAE flag, which have sparked anger across a wide section of Emaratis and Arabs living in the UAE – who see the flag colours on footwear as an insult to a nation.

Abdullah K, an Emarati professional, told this website, “Puma should have borne in mind the cultural sensitivities of the people of the UAE. The flag is a very sacred symbol for the UAE. It cannot be trivialised, especially not as footwear.”

Ahmed S, an Emirati businessman adds that while in some countries the flag can be draped in any manner as any accessory, this will never be acceptable in the UAE. “You cannot wear your nation’s flag on your feet. That is just disrespectful,” he said.

Ramzi Khalaf, an Arab expatriate working in advertising and marketing, said he was dissapointed that a big international brand like Puma had gotten it seemingly wrong.

"Big brands have to realise that you cannot have one idea for the whole world. Each area you operate in has to have tailor-made solutions. Especially here in the Middle East, where cultural senstivities are key, you have to be very careful."

At the time of filing this report, several complaints were coming in to this website about the Puma shoes, as anger seemed to be widespread.

Puma was yet to release a statement to the press.

@Arnold: Fully agree with you. All what Puma have to do is to be brave enough to accept that it has done a mistake and come out with an apology regarding this blunder.

Puma making shoe flag of the UAE is a disgrace. People work in Puma shoe company should know that we are deeply culturally over-sensitive country. We don't like shoes.

Guys, I'm not sure if this picture is even real! Take a close look... green colour seems to be that of a board marker!

Firstly, Puma has many a time made shoes with colors of all sorts of flags and I myself have seen locals wearing such shoes. Almost all Kappa shoes have a small Italian flag on it. Almost all Reebok Classic shoes have a Union Jack on it. Secondly, the colours black-red-green also represent the Pan African flag, it is not unique to UAE flag. Green-white-red (plausible) is the colour of the Italian flag. Grow up!

@Nasser. Where does it state these shoes have been launched for National Day? Incidentally, I have consulted my Italian and Mexican friends and they are not offended that Puma have used these colours. They have greater concerns.

@Trevor: Totally agree with you the shoes only has the colors, so it will look consistent when you hold the flag and wear the UAE T-shirt in the national celebration.

@travor: Buma has lunched the shoes for the UAE's national day. How can you claim that its not the UAE flag?

All flags are made with combination of some colors. With this logic, all shoes has to be made with single colors. I think people are taking this as an issue rather than a co-incident.

Big Brands like PUMA must have post graduates working for them who are well versed in International Marketing which clearly states one should study norms and culture of a particular country prior to launching any product the people can relate to. How can a big brand like Puma didn't go for market research prior to launch of this product?

Puma has been proudly making shoes since 1924 and probably doesn't find footwear offensive. They obviously weren't out to upset anyone when they made this 'error'. Let's have a bit of understanding that goes both ways. That way we don't need to get angry over silly things like this!

It's not the UAE flag on the trainers, just the colours. Does this mean red, green and white cannot appear on any footwear anywhere in the world without causing offence? If so, that would mean all shoes would have to be transparent for fear of angering a specific nationality.

Ridiculous! There needs to be a law for limiting prints of UAE flags from now on! The excitement is making some brands/ people to cross limits and being respectful! We are proud of the flag and what it means to the country!

This is unacceptable and I think it was preplanned by company...

This is totally wrong by the shoe company. They should do apology on this act from UAE.

This is what happens when you get foreign professionals operating in markets that they have never visited before!

This is completely unaccebtable and needs a big apology.Flags are also seen on tissue boxes and handkerchiefs which all go to teh rubbish after use . This needs to be stopped as well. We are all proud of our Flag which unites a nations with deep rooted traditions

@Abba, I totally agree with you. Its an idiotic blunder.

I can't believe such a big multinational company like Puma can commit such an idiotic blunder in international business. This will be a good case study for business books.
