A worker was injured after he allegedly jumped out of a building under construction that caught fire in Dubai's Deira area.
The building located next to 5-star hotel Hyatt Regency caught fire Monday afternoon. Civil Defence personnel and police officials rushed to the spot and the flame was brought under control.
According to an eyewitness, a construction worker jumped out of the mezzanine floor of the building.
Pushpa Dutta, who lives in a nearby building, said she saw four or five men working on the mezzanine floor of the building when the fire broke out on the top floor of the five-floor structure.
“As soon as the fire started spreading, the workers panicked and I saw this man jumping down. He fell down and was unconscious even as the other workers were sprinkling water on him to wake him up,” said Dutta.
“Fire extinguishers, ambulances and police vehicles rushed to the spot and the situation was quickly brought under control,” she added.
A senior Civil Defence official confirmed the incident and said the cause of the fire at the construction site is yet to be ascertained. “However no one has been injured,” the official said.
The fire broke out at around 3pm and thick black smoke bellowing out of the building was visible from Deira and parts of Sharjah as well.
