A police man was arrested in Abu Dhabi’s eastern region on charges of abusing his job by trying to extort money from an expatriate man.

Police said the cop had summoned that person and told him to pay Dh45,000 for a case against him although that man was not involved in any case.

The Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said the cop, identified as MA, is being questioned by the prosecutor on charges of abusing his job and extorting money.

Two seized with drugs deny charges

Two Asian men arrested by the police in Abu Dhabi for trying to sell heroin hidden in capsules said they did not know the capsules contained drugs.

The two had earlier been sentenced to death before they appealed the verdict on the grounds the drugs had been given to them by another man.

One defendant told court that he owed money to a friend, who told him to take the 36 drug capsules to another man in return for that debt.

He said he and his friend did not know the capsules contained heroin when they tried to hand the stuff to that person at a hotel in Baniyas.

The court adjourned hearings to October 20 to allow the defendants to get another lawyer.
