UPDATE: The tailback began clearing around 9.30am UAE time and traffic seemed to be flowing at its usual pace by 10am.

Abu Dhabi-bound traffic has been badly hit on Wednesday morning following an accident after the Ibn Battuta Mall, in the direction of Abu Dhabi.

Even after an hour of the accident, massive tailback can be seen right up until Dubai’s Times Square Centre Mall.

“Traffic #congestion due to an #Accident on Sheikh Zayed Rd. after Ibn Battuta Mall towards AbuDhabi,” Dubai Police tweeted.

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid getting stuck in the massive congestion.

“Anyone heading for Dubai Marina and Abu Dhabi will do well to avoid #SZR. Traffic is even moving!”

“10km tailback on SZR from MOE - accident just after Ibn Battuta (7 cars?) Discovery nightmare again too,” tweeted a morning commuter.

“Still badly backed up #AbuDhabi bound on #SZR. Just walked by in metro,” tweeted another.

“SZR at a standstill from Exit 27 direction AbuDhabi,” wrote another user.

“Its a parking  lot  #dubaimarina  #SheikZayed not a good sign,” added another.

“Gridlocked traffic on shk zayed road- Dubai to Abu Dhabi! View from my balcony. Lucky not driving in this,” tweeted a resident.

Another accident has been reported on Hessa street, causing a big traffic slowdown.
