The 260-slots parking allocated for the departures hall at Sharjah International Airport has been temporarily closed for maintenance work, which commenced on June 5, and is expected to take around a month.

Meanwhile, visitors to the airport are being redirected to the car park of the arrivals hall, which has 233 slots available.

The arrivals car park is at a couple of minutes walking distance from the departures hall, depending on where the car is parked, said the management.

The main objective of the work is to provide a drainage system for the car park, where water gets logged during the rainy season, let a spokesperson at Sharjah International Airport know.

However, the opportunity is utilized to simultaneously carry out other maintenance activities and improve the car parking infrastructure for both passengers and staff, added the spokesperson.

The activities form part of an extended renovation project, of which the first stage has already been launched, he explained.

“The renovation project includes the establishing of a new employee parking area providing for 750 car parking slots to cater to the growing needs of staff functioning at the airport. Keeping in mind their convenience and comfort, this new area will connect with the office building and terminals through sheltered waiting points, covered walkways, and bus shuttle services.

“The second phase is with the maintenance of the departure parking area, which started on the 5th of June 2013, and is expected to be completed in a month’s time. This area currently holds 260 parking slots and an additional number of slots will become available by the end of this project.

Ali Salim Al Midfa, Director-General of Sharjah Airport Authority said: “Passenger convenience is always at the forefront. We will do our utmost best to ensure their ease of travel at every step of their travel experience, through additional parking slots, renovation of the area, the development of a handicapped-friendly facility which will make it easier for this important class of the community to travel easily, and the use of new technology through modern parking barriers, payment machines, etc.”
