'Deport expats committing vice'

Expatriates convicted in vice cases must be jailed and deported from the UAE after completing their prison term, according to the country’s top court.

The Federal Supreme Court (FSC) issued the ruling in a case involving a foreigner found guilty of encouraging a woman to commit vice by blackmailing her into sleeping with him.

A court of first instance in a UAE emirate acquitted the defendant, prompting the prosecutor to appeal the sentence.

A court of appeals found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to one month in jail. It also fined him Dh2,000 but did not order his deportation.

The prosecutor again appealed with the FSC, which ordered a retrial of the defendant and “stressed that the UAE law includes deportation of foreigners convicted in vice cases,” according to the Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm'.

“The court emphasised the need for deportation any foreigner found guilty of committing or encouraging vice to preserve the values and public conduct in the UAE.”
