Dealers raising their consumer prices during the fasting month of Ramadan will be fined Dh100,000 as authorities brace to bring key shopping outlets under their control.

The ministry of economy said its inspectors would have powers to impose an instant fine of up to Dh100,000 against any shopping outlet found to be selling consumer items at higher prices just before or during Ramadan.

“We have sent letters to food suppliers, co-op societies and other major shopping outlets asking them not to raise their prices before getting a prior approval by the ministry,” said Hashim Al Nuaimi, consumer protection director.

“We have approved a new mechanism to control prices. Those caught selling at higher prices will be instantly fined up to Dh100,000…our men will be deployed through markets to ensure dealers respect this decision.”

He told local reporters on Sunday that co-ops and other hypermarkets have informed the ministry they would make a variety of offers during the fasting month, including price reductions of up to 50%, cost price for some products, special offers and 'Ramadan basket', a package containing different items for lower price.
