Dh200,000 diya saves killer from gallows

A killer who had been sentenced to death for premeditated murder was saved from the gallows when the UAE’s top court changed the verdict and ordered him to pay Dh200,000 diya (blood money) to the victim’s relatives.

The defendant had been convicted of stabbing a European man to death after he was caught robbing his house  and was sentenced to death by lower courts.

But the Federal Supreme Court decided to rescind the verdict and ordered the defendant to pay diya on the grounds the victim is Muslim.

Newspapers did not mention where in the UAE the crime took place.
