Dh39,200 stuck in ATM; finder stuck with jail

A Bangladeshi cleaner has been sentenced to three months in jail for stealing Dh39,200 from an ATM.

The money was deposited in the machine by a bank client, by the operation was not executed due to a technical error.

MR will be deported after serving his jail term.

Records show the bank’s client tried to deposit the amount via an ATM in a shopping mall. The process was not successfully completed after the notes got stuck in the machine and the client could not get a receipt.

The client filed a complained with the bank.

The bank investigated and found a technical error.

“Reviewing the camera footage, we saw RM insert his hand in the machine the next morning and pull some cash out. He was supposed to inform the administration and hand over the amount,” a manager at the bank told investigators.

RM admitted to stealing the amount.

He told officials that he transferred Dh26,199 to his home country.
