Dubai’s Department of Economic Development in Dubai, led by its Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection section, has seized about 200,000 counterfeit products worth more than Dh4 million.

These products bear the logos of brands well known in local and international markets.

The seizure comes as part of DED’s effort to protect intellectual property rights of brand owners and trademark holders and to protect consumers from commercial fraud.

DED’s Intellectual Property Team tracked the goods from the market till the place of storage and found two warehouses containing counterfeit products. The inventory process took over 12 hours.

The counterfeit products included electric cables and plugs used in the construction industry.
Ibrahim Bahazad, Senior Manager of IPR protection in DED, said: “Consumer protection is serious job since poor quality products can do much damage in the future.”

“The counterfeit products could cause deadly fires,” said Bahazad.

Bahazad said his team is keen to continue investigations, besides field visits and random inspections ones to detect sale of counterfeit products.

Leaflets have been distributed to make traders of the dangers and disadvantages of counterfeit goods and urging them to register their trademarks to protect it from encroachment by others.

Behzad urged consumers not to be tempted by lower prices of counterfeit goods since they are not as good as the original.

He also urged people to report such abuses by calling 600545555, or at the Twitter page @Dubai_consumers or via BlackBerry phones.
