Residents who were displaced after a fire erupted in Icon Tower 1 in Jumeirah Lakes Towers have returned to their homes.

“Residents have returned in batches. The last batch of residents have returned on Monday,” confirmed Naveed  Akhtar, representative of the building management of the tower. “The electricity has been restored.”

Since Friday morning, nearly half of the residents of Icon Tower 1 were discplaced after a fire erupted in the early morning.

The fire took place in the mechanical room and did not spread to any of the apartments, but resulted in a stop of electricity supply to the apartments on the 18th to 32nd floor.

Consequently, residents on these floors were unable to return to their apartments.

For the residents who did not have alternative accommodation, arrangements were made with Bonnington Hotel and Armada Hotel Apartments. The costs up to Dh5,000 can be reimbursed.

Although peace has restored in Icon Tower, it has not been restored to the resident’s minds.

The incident being the second case of fire in the tower, residents are wondering what is wrong with the building.

“I am happy to be back, because it was quite hectic not to be in my own home while working full-time. But I cannot just let this pass. I want to know what went wrong,” said Leila A, owner of an apartment on the 30th floor.

“I do not mean to point any fingers, but I think we should at least know why these incidents took place.”

The building was developed by Vakson Real Estate, and managed by maintenance company Open Eye Services, which is currently awaiting reports from the authorities on the cause of the fire.

“We are waiting for the report and will not be able to comment until we have that report,” said a spokesperson, adding that some action would be taken based on the findings.
